Belton, TX was first settled 1850 and named Nolanville, taking the name of nearby Nolan Springs which were named for Texan explorer Philip Nolan. In 1851, it changed its name to Belton after being named the county seat of newly created Bell County named after Texas’ Governor Peter H. Bell. Despite being a small town of around 300 residents, those residents were sharply split during the Civil War, with neighbors and friends fighting on either side. Nevertheless, over the years things settled down and the town had it’s first big burst of growth with the construction of its famed courthouse in the 1880’s.
