The area now known as Harker Heights was once owned by Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern. These two gentlemen began subdividing their land and selling off the lots in the late 50’s. It was in 1960 that this area, just east of Killeen, became incorporated into its own City: Harker Heights (named after Harley Kern). In its early days Killeen was a dry city – with alcohol sales being off limits. It’s widely rumored that Cox and Kern began Harker Heights as a place for folks to get away for a cocktail as its rules were a bit more lax.
Today, Harker Heights is a bustling city of around 30,000 people, offering outdoor activities with Stillhouse Lake and Dana Peak Park, and some of the most beautiful homesites and views in the area. Whether it’s fishing, boating, hiking, or if you want to relax at a spa, Harker Heights has all of that available.
